The answer to these questions lies in one of the most powerful and fascinating concepts in music theory: Functional Harmony. Far from being a set of rigid, academic rules, functional harmony is like a map, a true GPS that guides us through the emotional terrain of music. It doesn’t tell us where to go, but it explains why each path leads us to a different place.
In this post, we’ll dive into the basic concepts of functional harmony. We will uncover what it is, what it’s for, and how you—as a musician, composer, or arranger—can use it to deepen your understanding and enhance your art.
A Brief Recap: What is Harmony?
Before we talk about “function,” let’s remember what “harmony” is. If melody is the succession of notes over time, a horizontal line we can hum, harmony is the combination of notes sounding at the same time, a vertical dimension that gives depth, color, and context to the melody.
Think of music as a piece of fabric. The melody is the main thread that creates the pattern, while the harmony consists of all the other interwoven threads that create the texture, richness, and structure of the piece. Functional harmony is the logic that governs how these threads intertwine in the most cohesive and impactful way.
The Foundation of Everything: The Harmonic Field
To understand function, we first need to know our “cast” of chords. This cast comes from what we call the Harmonic Field (or diatonic harmony), which is simply the set of chords formed from each note of a particular scale.
Let’s use the clearest example of all: the C Major scale (C D E F G A B). If we build a three-note chord (a triad) on each of these notes, using only the white keys of the piano (that is, the notes from the scale itself), we get the following result:
- I – C Major (C): formed by the notes C – E – G
- ii – D minor (Dm): formed by the notes D – F – A
- iii – E minor (Em): formed by the notes E – G – B
- IV – F Major (F): formed by the notes F – A – C
- V – G Major (G): formed by the notes G – B – D
- vi – A minor (Am): formed by the notes A – C – E
- vii° – B diminished (Bdim): formed by the notes B – D – F
These seven chords are the family, the DNA of the key of C Major. It is from the relationship between them that the magic of functional harmony happens. We represent these chords with Roman numerals, using uppercase for major chords and lowercase for minor chords.
The Three Driving Forces: Harmonic Functions
Within this family of chords, three of them play the leading roles. They are the pillars that support the entire structure and create harmonic movement. Their functions are so clear that we can describe them with metaphors:
- Tonic Function (I degree): Rest, Home. The Tonic chord (in C Major, the C chord) is our starting and ending point. It represents stability, resolution, the feeling of “being home.” It is the music’s center of gravity. When a song ends on this chord, we feel it has reached a natural and satisfying conclusion.
- Dominant Function (V degree): Tension, the Urge to Return. The Dominant chord (in C Major, the G chord) is the opposite of the tonic. It carries strong instability and tension. It’s like being at your front door, eager to get inside. The sound of the dominant chord “asks,” almost begs, to resolve to the tonic chord. This is the strongest and most fundamental movement relationship in Western music. The V -> I transition is the backbone of countless songs.
- Subdominant Function (IV degree): The Journey, the Preparation. The Subdominant chord (in C Major, the F chord) has a moderate tension, a sense of moving away from rest, but without the urgency of the dominant. It acts as a path that takes us away from home, often leading toward the tension of the dominant, preparing the ground for the climax of the resolution. A classic progression is I -> IV -> V -> I (Tonic -> Subdominant -> Dominant -> Tonic).
Think of the music as a short story:
- You start at home (Tonic).
- You go out for a walk (Subdominant).
- You face a challenge that needs to be resolved (Dominant).
- You resolve the challenge and return home (Tonic).
This I – IV – V – I journey is the basis of countless songs, from nursery rhymes to major rock and pop hits.
Expanding the Vocabulary: Substitute Functions
If music only used these three chords, it would be functional, but perhaps a bit predictable. This is where the other chords from the harmonic field come into play, acting as “substitutes” or “representatives” of the main functions. They can perform similar roles because they share common notes with the primary chords, adding new colors and nuances to the harmonic landscape.
- Tonic Substitutes (iii and vi): The
iii(Em) andvi(Am) chords share notes with the Tonic chord and can be used to create a sense of relative rest, a slightly more melancholic or thoughtful repose than the main chord. TheI – vi – IV – Vprogression is perhaps the most famous in pop music, found in songs like “Stand By Me” by Ben E. King. - Subdominant Substitute (ii): The
ii(Dm) chord is the main substitute for the Subdominant (IV). It has a very similar sound and fulfills the same “moving away” function. Theii – V – Iprogression is the bread and butter of Jazz and Bossa Nova. The intro to “The Girl from Ipanema” (Tom Jobim/Vinicius de Moraes) is a classic example, where the harmony movesIVmaj7 – V7, but the melody and verses are built over numerousiim7 – V7progressions. - Dominant Substitute (vii°): The
vii°(Bdim) chord shares crucial notes with the Dominant and also creates strong tension that asks for resolution to the tonic, although its sound is more unstable and dissonant.
The Punctuation of Music: What are Cadences?
If chords and their functions are the words, cadences are the punctuation. A cadence is a progression of two or more chords that ends a phrase, section, or the entire piece, creating different feelings of finality. The most important ones are:
- Authentic Cadence (V – I): The strongest and most conclusive. It’s the “full stop” of the music. Example: The ending of most popular songs.
- Plagal Cadence (IV – I): Also conclusive, but with a softer, more serene sound. It’s often called the “Amen Cadence” for its use in hymns. The famous ending of “Hey Jude” by The Beatles, with the choir repeating “Na-na-na-na,” resolves harmonically with a plagal cadence.
- Deceptive Cadence (V – vi): Here’s the big surprise! When we expect the final resolution to
I, the composer “deceives” us and resolves to thevichord instead. This creates a dramatic effect, postponing the conclusion and injecting a dose of melancholy. The progression in the verse of “Someone Like You” by Adele masterfully uses this device to convey a sense of unresolved expectation.
Under the Magnifying Glass: What is Harmonic Analysis?
So, how do we discover all this in a song? Through harmonic analysis. To analyze a song harmonically is the process of “translating” the written chords (C, G, Am, F) into the Roman numerals of their functions (I, V, vi, IV).
What is it for?
- Deep Understanding: You go from just “playing the right chords” to understanding why they work and what their role is in the emotional structure of the music.
- Easy Transposition: Once you know the song is a
I – vi – IV – Vprogression, you can transpose it to any key instantly. In G Major, for example, it would beG – Em – C – D. - Memorization and Improvisation: It’s much easier to remember “one, six, four, five” than a list of chord names. For improvising, knowing the function of each chord helps you choose the notes that best fit each moment of tension or rest.
- Foundation for Arranging: It’s the starting point for reharmonization, which we’ll look at next.
From Theory to Practice: Functional Harmony in Arrangements and Compositions
This is where functional harmony ceases to be just theory and becomes a powerful creative tool. The process of reharmonization is nothing more than consciously applying these concepts to alter a song’s original harmony.
A simple technique is to use functional substitutes. If a passage in the music has the progression C – F – C (I – IV – I), an arranger might decide to replace the F (IV) with its substitute, Dm (ii), resulting in C – Dm – C (I – ii – I). The overall function (Tonic -> Departure -> Tonic) is maintained, but the color, the sound, changes subtly, perhaps making it smoother or more sophisticated.
A more advanced technique, very common in Jazz, MPB, and Bossa Nova, is the use of Secondary Dominants. Remember how the Dominant chord (V) creates a strong pull towards the Tonic (I)? What if we could create that same pull towards other chords in the harmonic field?
That’s exactly what a secondary dominant does. For example, in the key of C Major, our ii chord is D minor (Dm). What would be the dominant of D? It would be A Major with a seventh (A7). The A7 chord doesn’t belong to the harmonic field of C Major (which has an Am), but we can “borrow” it and insert it before the Dm to create a stronger, more interesting harmonic bridge.
Compare these two progressions:
- Simple:
C | C | Dm | G7(I | I | iim7 | V7) - With Secondary Dominant:
C | A7 | Dm | G7(I | V7/ii | iim7 | V7)
The second version has much greater movement and harmonic richness. The music of Tom Jobim, for example, is a masterclass in the elegant and expressive use of secondary dominants and ii-V-I progressions.

By mastering substitutes, cadences, and techniques like secondary dominants, you expand your color palette to paint increasingly rich and original sonic pictures.
